Pre-insulated steel pipes with PUR insulation
Pre-insulated piping was developed for district heating, where it is routinely used. District heating is characterised by long transportation distances that range from tens of metres to tens of kilometres of pipelines.
These pipelines distributing hot water or steam can be used with remote sources of heat that are more powerful and more effective at high-temperature combustion than decentralised units, and are fitted with effective filters to reduce emissions. Pre-insulated pipes for district heating can also be used with renewable sources of heat or to transport surplus heat from power stations and industrial and agricultural production.
All pre-insulated piping systems for district heating contain a high-quality steel carrier pipe which allows the transportation of high-temperature and high-pressure heat media with a total service life of up to 30 years. In addition, heat loss can be significantly reduced by selecting thicker insulation.
The Fintherm Standard pre-insulated pipeline system is used for underground heat and cold distribution. The steel carrier pipe is insulated with hard polyurethane foam blown with cyclopentane. The casing pipe, manufactured from high-density polyethylene, protects the pre-insulated pipe from the effects of the outside environment.
Fintherm Standard pre-insulated pipes meet all of the requirements of European standards EN 253, EN 448, EN 488 and EN 489, including the requirements of the European Association EUROHEAT & POWER and the German association AGFW/FW401.
Pipe operating parameters:
The maximum operating temperature is 153°C (160°C on a short-term basis) for a maximum operating overpressure of 2.5 MPa with a service life of 30 years. Pipes with PUR foam insulation with an increased thermal resistance of up to 165°C can be supplied on request.

The Fintherm Standard Spiro pre-insulated pipeline system is used for above-ground and industrial heat and cold distribution. The steel carrier pipe is insulated with hard polyurethane foam protected by an outer casing made of zinc-coated, spiral-wound superimposed sheets. On request, outer casing pipe can also be made of steel or aluminium spiral-overlaid sheets.

The Fintherm Twins pre-insulated piping system is used for underground heat and cold distribution. It consists of a pair of steel carrier pipes insulated with hard polyurethane foam within a single polyethylene casing.
Fintherm Twins pre-insulated pipes are used for maximum heat loss prevention, space saving and cost reduction of construction works compared to separate installation of flow and return pipes.
Fintherm Twins pre-insulated pipes meet all of the requirements of European standards EN 15698-1, EN 253, EN 448, EN 488 and EN 489, including the requirements of the European Association EUROHEAT & POWER and the German association AGFW/FW401.
Pipe operating parameters:
The maximum operating temperature is 130°C and the maximum operating overpressure is 2.5 MPa with a service life of 30 years. The maximum temperature difference between the flow and return pipes is 50°C.

1) Carrier pipe
The choice of materials for the carrier pipe depends largely on the type of medium transported, and the operating temperatures and pressures. For example, carrier pipes can be made of the following materials:
2) Casing pipe
The choice of a suitable material for the casing of pre-insulated pipes is largely dependent on the planned installation site, e.g.:
3) PUR insulation
The polyurethane insulation used is intended for continuous operating temperatures from -196°C up to +153°C (160°C on a short-term basis). Alternatively, for higher operating temperatures, we are able to supply pipes with polyurethane foam insulation with an increased thermal resistance of up to 165°C. Fintherm only uses foam blown with cyclopentane (CFC-free). This modern technology for high-pressure foam injection ensures low heat loss with pre-insulated pipes.
4) Detection wires
Fintherm pre-insulated pipeline systems are supplied with Nordic detection wires compliant with EN 14 419 as standard. We can supply pipeline systems with other types of detection wires on request (e.g. Brandes, Hagenuk, Isotronic).
5) Protective conduit for heating cables
Pre-insulated pipes can be fitted with a protective conduit for heating cables which are installed in the pipes during assembly. Heating cables protect the media flowing through the pipe against freezing, e.g. potable and waste water in shallow-buried pipes or pipes installed on bridges. Less commonly, heating cables can be used to heat media in order to increase their viscosity.
Pre-insulated piping for the distribution of hot water and heating water consists of a carrier pipe made of plastic to prevent pipe corrosion and possible leakage of contaminants. When using plastic pre-insulated pipes, the temperature and pressure of the transported water are lower than in other systems.
There is a choice of two types of pre-insulated piping systems: systems where the pipes are supplied in bars, and flexible systems with the pipes supplied in coils. For flexible systems, where temperatures are lower and a low weight is required for installations demanding high flexibility, cross-linked polyethylene insulation may also be used, as well as polyurethane insulation.
Fintherm Special PP-RCT
Fintherm Special PP-RCT pre-insulated plastic pipes are used for underground and above-ground distribution of hot water and heating water. The pipes are manufactured from polypropylene (PP-RCT), insulated with hard polyurethane foam, and covered with polyethylene pipe casing or Spiro casing made of zinc-coated spiral-wound superimposed sheets. If requested by the customer, the outer casing may also be manufactured from stainless steel or aluminium spiral-wound superimposed sheets.
Pipe operating parameters:
The maximum operating overpressure is 0.6 MPa at an operating temperature of 70°C with a service life of 25 years.
Fintherm Special PEX
Fintherm Special PEX pre-insulated flexible pipes are utilised for local and district distribution of hot water and heating water. Supplied in coils, the key feature of PEX pipes is their flexibility, which makes for quick and easy installation with a minimum number of joints.
The cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) carrier pipe, which is fitted with an EVOH oxygen barrier, is insulated with polyurethane foam blown with cyclopentane. The low-density polyethylene casing protects the polyurethane foam from the effects of the outside environment.
The pipes are manufactured and supplied in compliance with EN 15632 and EN 253 standards.
Pipe operating parameters:
The pipes are supplied in the standard dimension ratio (SDR) classes of 7.4 and 11. The maximum temperature of the transported medium is 95°C.
